ST Microelectronics VL53L0X is a Time-of-Flight Distance (ToF) system that is integrated into a compact module.
ST's FlightSense technology measures exactly how long it takes for emitted infrared laser pulses to reach the next object and be reflected back to a detector. Hence, it can be viewed as a tiny, self-contained lidar system.
This ToF measurement makes it possible to precisely determine the absolute distance to a target without the reflectivity of the object having a strong influence on the measurement. The sensor can report distances of up to 2 m (6.6 ft) with a resolution of 1 mm. However, its effective range and accuracy are highly dependent on environmental conditions and target characteristics such as reflectivity and size, as well as the sensor configuration.
Range measurements are available via the I2C (TWI) interface of the sensor, which is also used to configure the sensor settings. The sensor has two additional pins: a shutdown input and an interrupt output.
Sometimes these come on purple circuit boards and sometimes on green circuit boards, they are identical.
